Can You Dream Big?
The "Can You Dream Big" project was designed to increase awareness of
the North Torrance Youth Music programs as well as raise funds to support
those programs. The "Can You Dream Big" project also represented a
fundraising campaign to help defray the costs of the
Carnegie Hall Festival. The students had to rely on contributions
from friends, family, and the community if they were going to reach their
goal of attending the festival.
The North Torrance Youth Symphony Orchestra (NTYSO) is a youth
orchestra with members ranging from eight to eighteen years old. These
students are all volunteers. This is not a part of any school curriculum
and the participants do not receive grades or credits for their work.
Their participation is purely voluntary and yet they are held to the same
academic standards as other Torrance
Unified School District activities.

The instrumentation of this group includes traditional strings, brass,
woodwinds, percussion, and even classic Japanese instruments. Currently,
there are now over 60 students participating in weekly rehearsals and
performances.
These 90+ students that competed in the 2007 Forum Music Festival's
Judges Invitational competition in Southern California received the "Gold"
level of achievement for their performance in the High School bracket. The
majority of these students were in Elementary or Middle School, yet
competed in the High School bracket and received the festival's highest
honor.
Based on their Forum performance and subsequent audition, in March
2008, the orchestra performed at New York's Central Park and the
prestigious Carnegie Hall. They visited many historical sites in the city
including 9/11's Ground Zero, the site of the World Trade Center. The tour
was amazing!
We are always looking for both private and corporate contributions to
help send the students to additional venues which include world famous
theaters, and perform for a panel of judges. The total budget for the "Can
you Dream Big" program is enormous and any donation will help. If you or
someone you know is interested in making a contribution, please contact us
at
president@ntyme.org.
